Duddells LewisGene is the rare Malaysian roastery built entirely on blends — seven signature espresso blends, with no single-origin range at all. The bet is consistency: a blend can be rebuilt season after season to taste the same, which is exactly what espresso and milk drinks need.
Most specialty roasteries chase single origins. Duddells LewisGene went the other way. While the rest of the third-wave world was shouting "single origin, light roast, pour-over only," Duddells LewisGene built its reputation on something less fashionable and far harder to do well: the blend.
Specifically, espresso blends. Seven of them. Each is built from a deliberate mix of origins, profiled and balanced for one thing: consistency under pressure.
"A great single origin is a snapshot. A great blend is a composition." — Duddells LewisGene
Why Blends Are Harder Than Singles
Single-origin coffee asks the roaster to get out of the way. The bean is the star; the roaster's job is to preserve what's already there. Blending is the opposite. You're starting with three or four green coffees that taste nothing alike — a bright washed Ethiopian, a heavy natural Brazilian, an earthy Indonesian — and asking yourself: can I make these three things become one thing?
Get it wrong and the blend tastes muddled. Each origin steps on the others. Get it right and something quietly remarkable happens — the blend tastes more than the sum of its parts. The Brazilian gives body. The Ethiopian gives top notes. The Indonesian gives a low-end rumble that holds milk together without going bitter.
This is the craft Duddells LewisGene has been quietly mastering for years.
The Signature Range
Duddells LewisGene's seven blends form a deliberate spectrum — from bright and fruit-led at one end to deep and smoky at the other. Six are roasted medium-dark; Rainora is the one medium roast.
The Seven Blends
- Rumah
- Pineapple candy · milk chocolate · toasted almond · brown sugar
- Rainora
- White chocolate · tangerine · red fruit · cookies
- Sao Paulo
- Almond · nutmeg · caramelised · roasted chocolate
- Grisoro
- Avocado · bittersweet cocoa · caramel
- Wisdom
- Chocolate · caramelised sweetness · smoky
- Veneto
- Chocolate · full and rounded · smoky undertones
- Ebony
- Walnuts · cranberry · liquorice · dark chocolate · dry herbs
The Roasting Philosophy
Duddells LewisGene's roasts sit firmly in the medium to medium-dark band — the sweet spot for espresso. This isn't a stylistic preference; it's a functional one. Espresso lives or dies on solubility. Light roasts tend to underextract in a 25-second espresso shot, leading to sour, vegetal results unless your machine, grinder, and water chemistry are all dialled in perfectly.
Medium roasts are forgiving. They give body without bitterness, sweetness without sourness, and a clean finish whether you're pulling a straight shot or building a flat white. Duddells LewisGene roasts with cafe baristas and home enthusiasts both in mind — the same bag should perform on a RM100,000 La Marzocco and a RM2,000 Breville.
That's the discipline behind the craft. Anyone can roast a competition lot. Roasting a blend that delivers cup after cup, week after week, in dozens of different setups across Malaysia — that's the work.
Where to Start
If you've never tried Duddells LewisGene before, our recommendation is this:
- Start with Rumah if you mostly drink lattes: pineapple candy, milk chocolate and toasted almond.
- Try Rainora if you tend to like brighter, fruit-leaning coffees. It is the medium roast of the range and also works as a pour-over.
- Go to Ebony if you want a bolder cup: walnuts, liquorice and dark chocolate.
